Exercise doesn’t always have to be some long and drawn out process, nor does it require costly gym memberships, workout clothes, or protein shakes. Something as simple as a walk around the neighborhood can provide health benefits.

Research has shown that a simple walking regimen can do more than improve cardiovascular health, but it can also boost your mood much like an antidepressant. The reason we don’t see as many people walking the streets versus going to the pharmacy is people find the convenience of taking a pill more lucrative than actually walking around. But walking certainly has far less harmful side effects.

Walking has also been shown to boost energy levels. Researchers found that 3 separate 15 minute walks in a day did better at regulating blood sugar than a single 45 minute walk. What researchers are finding is that it’s not the quantity of time spent walking but the quality of the pace. A good vigorous walk, as if running late to an appointment but without the stress of being late for anything, is better in short bursts than a long drawn out walk with a slower pace and uneven gait.

Working in a short walk into your daily routine can also have great benefits to reducing bad cholesterol, increasing good cholesterol, and reducing weight down to a healthy level.
